Influence of structural disorder on Raman scattering in amorphous

The intensity of Raman scattering is sensitive to the degree of the structural disorder in solids, so this method can be used to measure relative fractions of the amorphous and the crystalline phases. However, there are problems in accurate estimation of such a fraction using experimental Raman spec ...

Composite optical vortices - RIT Center for Imaging Science

... Being a topological phase structure, an optical vortex is readily affected when it is combined with other fields. The new or ‘‘composite vortex’’ may be repositioned in space or annihilated, and other vortices may spontaneously form in the net field.13–15 The velocity at which a vortex actually move ...

Orbital angular momentum: origins

... Most scientists realize that light carries a linear momentum equivalent to h̄k0 per photon and, if circularly polarized, a spin angular momentum (SAM) of ±h̄ per photon. In 1992, Allen et al. recognized that light beams with an azimuthal phase dependence of exp(iφ) carry an orbital angular momentum ...

Optical tweezers

Optical tweezers (originally called ""single-beam gradient force trap"") are scientific instruments that use a highly focused laser beam to provide an attractive or repulsive force (typically on the order of piconewtons), depending on the refractive index mismatch to physically hold and move microscopic dielectric objects similar to tweezers. Optical tweezers have been particularly successful in studying a variety of biological systems in recent years.
