... The skills required to become a "particle detective" were taught in the morning lectures at each institute. Since in most countries particle physics is not normally taught at school, the talks had to go all the way from basic explanations to the world of quarks and leptons. "Easy-to-follow explanati ...

... of a hundred thousand B decays, requiring huge numbers of high-energy collisions and unprecedented accelerator performance. The interference appears in the time-dependence of B decays. Oddone had the idea to create B mesons in motion, in asymmetric electron-positron collisions, to allow the interfer ...

... Charged leptons like electrons and muons are easy to see as they can interact via the electromagnetic force. Quarks interact via the strong force which prevent quarks from being observed. Quarks are always confined inside hadrons. Hadrons are divided into baryons and mesons: Baryons contain 3 quarks ...

It is designed to detect a wide range of particles and phenomena produced in the LHC's highenergy proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions and will help to answer questions such as: "What is the Universe really made of and what forces act within it?" and "What gives everything mass?" It will ...

Future Circular Collider

Future Circular Collider (FCC) is an integral conceptual design study for post-LHC particle accelerator options based on a new 80–100-km-circumference tunnel infrastructure. The collaboration is open to scientific institutes and companies of any size from all nations. At the moment there are 57 institutes from 22 nations. The Future Circular Collider study has an emphasis on proton-proton and electron-positron (lepton) high-energy frontier machines. It is exploring the potential of hadron and lepton circular colliders, performing an in-depth analysis of infrastructure and operation concepts and considering the technology research and development programs that would be required to build a future circular collider. A conceptual design report will be delivered before the end of 2018, in time for the next update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics.
