... AbstractFrom Frank Close, John Ellis to Brian Cox, particle physicists have been talking a lot to the so-labelled ‘general public’. In outreach and public engagement activities, they are normally alone on the stage, playing solo in front of a huge crowd of audience. Besides, the background of the st ...

Introduction: what is quantum field theory ?

... Yet another reason to treat fields as the fundamental physical quantity is that all particles of the same type are the same. This is much more serious than it initially sounds. For example, two electrons are identical in every way, regardless of where they came from and what they’ve been through. Th ...

10. Nuclear fusion in stars

... The interstellar medium consists mostly of hydrogen with a significant contribution of helium, approximately 10% by number or 30% by mass. The most important fusion reaction therefore involves two protons or hydrogen nuclei. To understand the thermonuclear reactions, three things must be understood: ...

Future Circular Collider

Future Circular Collider (FCC) is an integral conceptual design study for post-LHC particle accelerator options based on a new 80–100-km-circumference tunnel infrastructure. The collaboration is open to scientific institutes and companies of any size from all nations. At the moment there are 57 institutes from 22 nations. The Future Circular Collider study has an emphasis on proton-proton and electron-positron (lepton) high-energy frontier machines. It is exploring the potential of hadron and lepton circular colliders, performing an in-depth analysis of infrastructure and operation concepts and considering the technology research and development programs that would be required to build a future circular collider. A conceptual design report will be delivered before the end of 2018, in time for the next update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics.
