Trilobite Excavation July 2008 Mrs. Koenig splits open sheets of Cambrian age shale in a quarry NW of Delta, Utah. These rocks contain fossils of trilobites, an index fossil from the Cambrian, about 500 million years ago. The quarry is an outcrop of shale that is eroding away. Breaking apart the eroded pieces with a geologists hammer might revel a trapped trilobite fossil. Trilobite cast fossils found at the quarry by Mrs. Koenig. Note the raised image. A trilobite mold fossil. Note the depressed image.
