**Same ADD – same signs in front of the numbers, add the numbers and keep the sign
EXAMPLE: -5 – 8
1. SAME SIGN (-)
2. ADD THE NUMBERS 5 + 8 = 13
3. KEEP THE SIGN (-)
ANSWER: -5 – 8 = -13
**Different SUBTRACT – different signs in front of the numbers, subtract the numbers
and take the sign of the BIGGER number
EXAMPLE:
-6 + 10
1. DIFFERENT SIGNS (-) and (+)
2. SUBTRACT THE NUMBERS 10 – 6 = 4
3. TAKE THE SIGN OF THE BIGGER NUMBER 10 is bigger than 6,
since 10 is positive, our answer will be positive
ANSWER: -6 + 10 = 4
**Number Line – Place your starting number on the number line and move left
(subtraction) and right (addition) how many spaces you need
