There was a fierce and widespread outbreak of plague, probably bubonic and pneumonic, that ravaged Europe during the 14th century. Fleas, which lived on the rodents, carried the bacillus to humans by carrying blood from rodents to the people. Unfortunately, for those who were infected, the bug quickly brought a death sentence, as over the course of three or four days the victims experienced horrible pain. The humans who became infected suffered from high fevers and aching limbs. They also experienced the vomiting of blood and swelling of the lymph nodes. These swellings produced blackish coloured spots on the body. Death resulted soon after as these swellings expanded until they burst. infected To have germs present • If the wound becomes infected —indicated by red, hot, inflamed skin surrounding the wound—clean the wound site and replace the bandages every 12 hours until the infection subsides. microbe Very tiny germ Unbroken skin provides a line of defense against invasion by microbes or parasites. antibodies Substances that destroy germs.
