HIV / STD
• Among the three modes of transmission of
HIV viz. Blood borne, Vertical and Sexual,
SEXUAL TRANSMISSION accounts for
the most HIV infection in the world.
HIV / STD
• The concentration of HIV in genital tract
secretion from both males and females is
increased at times when Sexual
transmission is thought to be enhanced.
• One of the most important cofactor for HIV
transmission being inflammation of genital
tract.

• Transmission of Sexually acquired HIV
described as R = B x D x C
R-> No. of Secondary infection from a
given infection.
B->The mean efficiency of Transmission.
D->Duration of Infectiousness.
C->The mean partner change rate.

• All tools needed for HIV prevention have
already been developed for prevention of
STD, but not properly deployed, like :
-Behavior change
-Having lesser number of partners.
-Safe sex practices (Usage of Condoms
etc.) especially CSW’s.
-Early detection and therapy.

• Treatment of STD’s has proven a successful HIV
intervention
• Several biological studies have demonstrated
that STD’s >> the shedding of HIV in both male
and female genital secretions
• Treatment of STD’s << the shedding of HIV.
• STD’s probably << mucosal resistance to HIV.
