Waves in space- you’re surrounded by electromagnetic waves
 Watching television, cell phones, microwave
Sound and water waves- waves are created by vibrations
o Energy travels from particle to particle, if there is no
matter than energy can not travel. (Only in sound and
water waves)
o Electromagnetic waves- made by vibrating electric
charges and can travel through space where matter is not
present
o Uses vibrating electric and magnetic fields not matter
-Electric and Magnetic Fields
o Using magnets to see how a magnetic field exists
o Paper clips jump to magnet without touching it first
Electric charges are surrounded by electric fields
o It does this with no matter present, in space.
Magnetic Fields and Moving Charges
o When you have a moving electric current, a magnetic
field surrounds it
Changing Electric and Magnetic Fields
o Changing magnetic field creates changing electric field
o Changing electric field creates charging magnetic field
-Making Electromagnetic Waves- Produced when something vibrates- an
electric charge that moves back and forth the electric field around it changes,
which then creates a changing magnetic field, which then creates a changing
electric field, which then creates a changing Magnetic field.
o The changing magnetic to electric fields create transverse
waves.
-Properties of Electromagnetic waves- All matter contains charged particles
that are always in motion- all objects emit electromagnetic waves
Pg. 358
Waves speed – An electromagnet waves travel at 300,00 km/s
Speed of light- nature’s speed limit
Travels the fastest through gases
Travels the slowest through solids
Waves and Particles- a wave is a disturbance that carries energy, and a
particle is a piece of matter
Electromagnetic waves can behave as a wave?
Could electrons shoot through two slits- what happens?
Shine light through two slits, and creates an interference.
Pg. 359
Figure 7: Electrons can behave like waves.
