... Def.: Let p and q be two arbitrary propositions, the implication pq is false when p is false and q is true, and true otherwise. p  q is true when p is true and q is true, q is true, or p is false. p  q is false when p is true and q is false. Example: r : “The dog is barking.” s : “The dog is awak ...

Their logical structure differs only with respect to the negation of the antecedent; thus, one implication is the negation of the other. (c) Why does q license existenti ...

FIRST DEGREE ENTAILMENT, SYMMETRY AND PARADOX

... First Degree Entailment (fde) is a logic well suited to fixed point solutions to the paradoxes. Perhaps it is too well suited, because it allows paradoxical sentences to be evaluated in two distinct ways: Paradoxical sentences can be assigned the value n (neither true nor false: {}) or b (both true ...

... A more radical interpretation of the paradoxes has been advocated by Brower and his intuitionist school. They refuse to accept the universality of certain basic logical laws, such as the law of excluded middle: A or not A. Such a law, they claim, is true for finite sets, but it is invalid to extend ...

Truth-bearer

A truth-bearer is an entity that is said to be either true or false and nothing else. The thesis that some things are true while others are false has led to different theories about the nature of these entities. Since there is divergence of opinion on the matter, the term truth-bearer is used to be neutral among the various theories. Truth-bearer candidates include propositions, sentences, sentence-tokens, statements, concepts, beliefs, thoughts, intuitions, utterances, and judgements but different authors exclude one or more of these, deny their existence, argue that they are true only in a derivative sense, assert or assume that the terms are synonymous,or seek to avoid addressing their distinction or do not clarify it.
