Rocks
The Earth’s lithosphere is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks form in
different ways, either on or below the Earth’s crust. Rocks are natural materials made up of one
or more minerals. They are identified by their properties, just like minerals. Rocks are
classified into three groups-igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic-depending on how they
form.
A rock can form deep inside the Earth as well as on its surface. Some rocks form from
melted minerals that cool and harden. Others form from small pieces of minerals and rocks or
from the remains of dead organisms. Rocks can also form from existing rocks. Heat and
pressure can slowly turn them into other rocks.
The Earth is constantly changing. The constant changes that occur are responsible for
the wearing down and transferring of one type of rock to another. The changes that occur are a
cycle that is constantly running.
