Section 12.2
Algebra 2
12.2 Analyze Arithmetic Sequences and Series p. 802-808
Objective: 1. You will study Arithmetic Sequences and Series.
Arithmetic Sequence (Arithmetic Progression) – a sequence in which the
difference between any 2 successive terms is constant.
Common Difference – the constant difference between each term.
Rule for an Arithmetic Sequence
In an Arithmetic Sequence with first term a1 and common difference “d”
the nth term is given by
***
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
***
Example: The nth term of an Arithmetic Sequence with a first term of 2
and common difference of 3 is given by:
an = 2 + (n – 1)3
an = 2 + 3n – 3
an = 3n – 1
