Margin Questions
A. Constantine chose the location of Byzantium for his new capital because it was
strategically located for trade and defense purposes.
B. If the Huns had not moved into the west I think Rome still would have fallen to
invaders because emperor Romulus Augustulus was only fourteen and probably
had no idea how to control the Roman army let alone his empire.
Skillbuilder
1. I don’t believe any changes to the contributing factors could have reversed the
decline of the empire unless all of them were changed because every aspect of the
empire was beginning to fall apart.
2. All of the contributing factors were important in the fall of the Western Roman
Empire. They all had a major impact on different parts of the empire.
Section Assessment
3. The main internal causes of the empire’s decline were political, social, economic
and military problems.
4. Diocletian succeeded in preserving the empire by ruling with an iron fist and
severely limiting personal freedom. He had restored order to the empire.
5. Many Germanic tribes began invading the Roman Empire because they tried to
flee from the Huns who began destroying all the Germanic tribes.
6. The splitting of the empire helped it survive for another 200 years because it
made it easier to control the empire with two rulers assigned to either the east or
the west.
