Part I – Essay
Write a one-page essay discussing the topic of propaganda. Think about the definition of
propaganda (the use of information to manipulate others). Your ideas may include, but are
not limited to the following:
-
The positive and negative effects of propaganda
Why people allow themselves to become manipulated
Techniques of propaganda that are used and you have recognized
How can you avoid propaganda and make yourself an informed consumer?
How do you now view advertising?
How was propaganda used in “The Lottery” of “Happy Trails to You”?
Part II – Real Life Examples of Propaganda
Find three examples of propaganda from the world around you. You may find your examples in
advertisements, speeches, reports, articles, newspapers, magazines, television, radio, the
internet, email, "spam," and live sources.
Each example must come from a different source and demonstrate a different technique. Only
one of your examples may be transcribed ("as heard on...") instead of printed or cut-and-pasted.
Your transcribed example must be copied word-for-word.
You must document all your sources. See teacher’s website for examples of correct format.
Briefly explain how and why the example demonstrates the technique. Who does it appeal to?
