UNION UNIVERSITY’S LESSON PLAN FORMAT (Template available at http://www.uu.edu/programs/tep) Name Devyn Schwab Date 11/23/10 Grade/Subject If this lesson is part of a unit, what is its number? 7th grade science yes ______ TN CURRICULUM STANDARDS ADDRESSED BY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Grade 7 Life Science Grade 7: Standard 1 – Cells GLE 0707.1.3 Describe the function of different organ systems and how collectively they enable complex multicellular organisms to survive. SPI 0707.1.3 Explain the basic functions of a major organ system. GOAL(S): TSW understand organ systems. OBJECTIVES AND ASSESSMENT: Learning Objectives (stated behaviorally) TSW list all of the organ systems in the body. TSW recognize the major organs in the organ systems. TSW describe the functions of each organ system in the body. Assessment (formative/summative) Level of Thinking (Bloom’s Taxonomy OR Webb’s Depth of Knowledge) Bloom’s Taxonomy knowledge/remembering Bloom’s Taxonomy comprehension/understanding TSW answer questions at the end of the class period. (formative) TSW participate in a class discussion after viewing VoiceThread. (formative) TSW create an advertisement Bloom’s Taxonomy banner for an organ system using comprehension/understanding Microsoft Word 2010. (summative) INSTRUCTION: Lesson Opener o Hook: Did everyone eat breakfast this morning? Who all had P.E. today? Were you breathing hard whenever you finished exercising? Has anyone been sick lately? Did anyone stub their toe this morning while getting ready? o Bridge: Today we are going to learn about the different organ systems in our body. Development of concepts and/or skills An organ system is a group of organs that work together to carry out a particular task. There are ten organ systems in the body, and each one has a different function. 1. circulatory 2. respiratory 3. nervous 4. skeletal 5. muscular 6. digestive 7. endocrine 8. lymphatic 9. reproductive 10. excretory - The circulatory system is the system the pumps and circulates blood through our body. I want everybody to put their hand over their heart. Do you feel it beating? You should. Every time it beats, it is pumping blood to all parts of the body. - The respiratory system is what allows us to breath. Everybody take a deep breath. Now, exhale. Your respiratory system is bringing in oxygen when you inhale, and it releases carbon dioxide when you exhale. - The system that receives and interprets stimuli and transmits impulses to the organs is the nervous system. Has anyone ever touched something really hot then jerked your hand away really fast? It was your nervous system that told your muscles to move your hand away. - The skeletal system is the support system. It is responsible for providing support to the body and protecting delicate internal organs. - The digestive system breaks down the food we eat and then absorbs the nutrients that we need to live. - The endocrine system is the system that relays chemical messages that help control physiological processes such as nutrient absorption and growth. - Who has been sick before? All of you. Well, the lymphatic system is the organ system that made you feel better. That is because the lymphatic system destroys and removes invading microbes and viruses from the body. - The organ system responsible for manufacturing cells that allow for reproduction - The last organ system is the excretory system. It is responsible for filtering out cellular wastes, toxins, and excess water or nutrients from the circulatory system. Ok. Now that we have talked about all of the organ systems, let’s watch the VoiceThread that I put together. Pay close attention because I will be asking you some questions afterwards. (Watch video) Now, what are some of the organs that were in the video? What organ system are those organs from? Does anyone know? Good. All of you were paying attention. I have some good news for all of you. Instead of taking a traditional test, we are going to make an advertisement for each organ system. We are going to go into the computer lab in the next couple of days, and using Microsoft Word 2010, you will create an advertisement, similar to what you would see in a newspaper or sales paper. What should you put in this advertisement? You will need to include the organs that are in the organ system and the function of the system. It will need to be written as though you are trying to sell the organ system. You need to use at least 3 or 4 pictures and a lot of color. You can use the internet to get the pictures, or you can use clipart. Make your advertisement interesting. I don’t want you to just type something up, slap some pictures on there, and turn it in. I need to see that you put effort into it. You will get to pick your own organ system. Everybody will do their own advertisement, but since there are 20 of you and only 10 organ systems, 2 people will have the same organ system. However, you will NOT be allowed to work together. In fact, I don’t even want the people with the same organ system to sit close to each other. Everyone’s advertisement should look different. You will have one day to do it so go ahead and be thinking about what system you want to do and how your advertisement is going to look. After you have finished them, you will turn them in to me. I will look at them and hand them back to you the next day. When you get them back, you will present your advertisement to the class. I want you to act like you are selling the organ system to us. It needs to be about 1-2 minutes long. After everyone has presented, the class will vote on whose presentation they liked the best. Whoever gets the most votes will get 5 extra credit points to use on a test so BE CREATIVE. Whenever you get here tomorrow, you will need to let me know what organ system you would like to do. Have a couple of choices because only 2 people can have the same system. Ok. Does anyone have any questions? (Answer questions) Well, it’s almost time to go so let’s go over what we have learned today. Lesson Closure 1. What organ systems are in the body? 2. What is the main organ in the circulatory system? The nervous system? The respiratory system? 3. What does the digestive system do? Good job today everyone! Have a good rest of the day and remember to sign up for an organ system by tomorrow! MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY NEEDED FOR THE LESSON: computer with projector, VoiceThread, computer lab with 20 computers that have access to the internet and Microsoft Word 2010 EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES THAT WOULD BE USED WERE THEY AVAILABLE AND A DESCRIPTION OF USE: laptops for the classroom REFLECTIONS ON TEACHING AND LEARNING: 1. As you reflect on the lesson, how did it actually unfold as compared to what you had anticipated happening as you did your planning? IIIC 2. Provide the data/information that you have used to determine your students’ progress toward this lesson’s goals. Include individual and group information. IIIA and IIIC 3. How will you use your students’ performance today as you envision the next step for these students in learning? IIIC and Planning Domain 4. If you were to teach this lesson again to these students, what changes would you make? IIIC 5. As you reflect over this lesson, what ideas or insights are you discovering about your teaching? IIIC 6. How did your choices and actions of classroom management support student learning?
