Dice of Fortune Aim: The highest multi-digit number wins the game. Teaching purpose To learn to read large numbers. To practise place value understanding. To practise addition. Equipment: Either a six-sided or 10-sided dice Playing board as shown below. 4 1 5 3 8 2 4 7 6 3 0 7 9 6 0 2 7 5 5 2 1 6 3 6 3 4 1 2 2 1 9 1 0 To play: Tutor explains the top right-hand box represents a one digit number, and must be filled in first. The next row down, the 2 boxes represent a 2-digit number. At each roll of the dice players must record the number rolled in one of the cells before the next roll is made. Remember the aim is to get the highest number. The next row represents a 3-digit number etc. When all the cells are full add up the total for each column. (Total: 1 million 63 thousand 634) To check if students have added correctly ask them to add the digits in their answer across until they have a single digit. e.g. 1 + 0 + 6 + 3 + 6 + 3 + 4 = 23, 2 + 3 = 5 The students who have used the above digit in the game should all have ended up with “5” as their answer. Different numbers will give a different final result. The number could be any digit between 1 and 9. By using a place value chart students could now practise saying their numbers
