Integer Rules
Adding Integers:
When the numbers have the same sign, just add them and
the answer will have the same sign
Ex: -5 + -4 = -9
12 + 6 = 18
When the numbers have different signs, subtract them and
your answer will have the sign of the larger absolute value
Ex: -8 + 10 = 2
14 + (-20) = -6
Subtracting Integers:
“Keep Change Change” Change the operation to addition and
change the sign of the second number. Then use the
correct addition rule. You are adding the opposite.
Ex: 5 – (-2) becomes 5 + 2 which equals 7
-7 – 9 becomes -7 + -9 which equals -16
Multiplying and Dividing Integers:
If the numbers have the same sign then the answer is
positive and if they have different signs then the answer is
negative.
Ex: (-6)(-9) = 54
(-7)(3) = -21
80/ -2 = -40
-36 / -6 = 6
