Aim: What are the three types of muscles in
the human body?
I. Human Muscles
A. Three types
1. Skeletal Muscle
a. Controlled by somatic nervous system
(remember?)
b. Moves the bones of the skeleton
c. Skeletal Muscle tissue has striations
d. Voluntary
striations
e. Skeletal muscles work in opposing pairs –
when one contracts, the other relaxes. Ex:
bicep and tricep.
Opposing pairs
Pierre, what are the opposing muscles to the
chest muscles?
Yes!!! The back muscles are the opposing
muscles to the chest muscles!!
Good job Pierre!
f. Muscles that bend joints are called flexors.
Muscles that cause the joints to straighten out
are called extensors.
2. Visceral Muscle (smooth muscle)
a. Controlled by autonomic nervous
system
b. Controls organs of the body (muscles
in the digestive tract, blood vessels)
c. Has no striations (smooth in
appearance)
d. Involuntary
3. Cardiac Muscle (Heart muscle)
a. Controlled by autonomic nervous system
b. Controls heartbeat
c. Has striations
d. Involuntary
striations
B. Connective Tissue
1. Ligament (LBB) – connects bone to bone.
2. Tendon (TMB) – connects muscle to bone.
Q. What are the three types of muscles?
LUUUUUKE!! Show us what you know. Come
on up to the board.
Nice job Luke – although you needed a little
help from the class. Yes the three muscles are
skeletal, visceral, and cardiac.
Q. Which muscles have striations?
Oh? OK Kristen – you want to answer this
one? Go to it.
That is correct! Both skeletal and cardiac
muscle show striations.
Q. What is meant by opposing muscles?
This is all you Mikey Fresh!
That is correct Mike!! Opposing muscles
work in pairs – while one contracts the other
one relaxes.
