What is a lake?
• A basin in the landscape that collects
water.
• Basins are formed by glaciers, volcanoes,
and shifting of the earth’s crust.
Physical Conditions
• Light absorption determines the color of a
lake.
Structure of a lake
• A lake is divided into three depth zones:
• Epilimnion- warm surface layer
• Metalimnion- temperature changes 1°C
per meter of depth
• Hypolimnion- cold and dark waters
