Wind Erosion 18.1
6. Saltation
The jumps and bounces that keep grains of sand
moving in the wind.
See page 483
7. Deflation
A common form of wind erosion. This is the
process by which the wind removes the top fine
layer of dust and leaves behind the larger rock
particles.
8. Ventifacts
Rocks that have been pitted or smoothed by wind
abrasion. These can help determine the
prevailing wind direction.
9. Dunes
Mounds of wind deposited sands. These occur on
the beach and in the desert.
See page 485
See page 486, Table 1
Four types:
a) Barchan: limited amount of sand; crescent
shaped.
b) Parabolic: U-shaped; involve plants
c) Transverse: sand is plentiful; long ridges
d) Longitudinal: ridges will be parallel to wind
direction
10. Loess
Thick deposits of fine grained dust that can form
steep bluffs.
