RUAMRUDEE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAMME 2012-13 SEASON OF EVENTS ART, MUSIC & THEATRE MARGO ANTON ARTIST “I have embraced mosaics as my artistic medium for its marriage of sculpting and painting, light reflective qualities, and interesting play of positive and negative space. Mosaicking is an ancient art form, and I try to draw a sense of the eternal into my work, producing works that have a union of classical and modern elements. My works, whether realistic, abstract, or decorative, are usually inspired by the natural world. The mosaics I create usually start with an idea that becomes concrete through the drawing of a cartoon, a simple line drawing that forms the basis of the mosaic. The drawing is never too detailed, allowing the mosaic materials themselves to influence the final outcome. The materials I use are the finest mosaic materials I can find: 24k gold tile, Italian glass, handcrafted Venetian millefiori, stained glass, mirror, dichroic glass, Italian marble, unglazed porcelain.” RIS PERFORMING ARTS 2 MARGO ANTON ARTIST January 2012 RIS PERFORMING ARTS 3 SHERRI D SUTTON STAND-UP COMEDIAN & THEATRE PRACTITIONER August 2012 RIS PERFORMING ARTS 4 DESTA HAILE SINGER & THEATRE PRACTITIONER August 2012 RIS PERFORMING ARTS 5 MATTHEW GODFREY ACTOR & THEATRE PRACTITIONER August 2012 RIS PERFORMING ARTS 6 ANNE WU COMPOSER/ MUSICIAN February 2012 RIS PERFORMING ARTS 7 MARGO ANTON Margo Anton started her journey to mosaics with journeys elsewhere. Seeing the artworks and history of Europe led her to pursue a major in Classics; an archaeological dig in 1996 saw her digging towards a mosaic in a Roman villa. In 2002 after a very short lived foray into acrylics painting, in which she discovered a desire to create, but not with paint, she began to research the modern methods of mosaic making. Margo produced her first mosaic in early 2003. She is a self-taught artist. Margo started her company, Minerva Mosaics, in the spring of 2004. ANNE WU Originating from the UK, Anne graduated with a BSc Honors in Music from City University with piano studies at the London Guildhall School of Music. She has taught Music and Musical Theatre for over 12 years internationally and in the UK . Under her artiste name of Anne Wu, she has composed for Weinstein Films, the International Labour Organisation and for performing arts festivals and theatre projects in the international school community. She is an IB Diploma Music Examiner and a Member Practitioner for International Schools Theatre Association, ISTA for whom she delivers Specialist Music workshops and works as an Ensemble Leader with Middle and High School students. To date, Anne’s work has taken her around the world to the USA, Asia and Europe , where she has recently co-written a chart topping debut album with Polish star, Pola. Anne has enjoyed teaching students from different cultures and musical abilities, from students who were 'tone deaf' to the young Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis. SHERRI D SUTTON Being the first in her family to receive a college degree, Sherri spent a few years as a social worker for abused children before she moved to Atlanta to pursue acting and directing full-time. She worked with numerous theatre companies but owes a great deal to Frank Wittow at the Academy Theatre and John Stephens with Theatre Gael. It was there that Sherri explored playwriting, real-ensemble acting and directing. Seven years ago Sherri became the artistic director for the Atlanta International School where she built an outstanding theatre program. She gained first hand knowledge of world theatre where she learned and taught the conventions of Bunraku, Commedia, Peking Opera, Elizabethan, Restoration, Greek, Vaudeville, Musicals and Improv, just to name a few. Sherri is a highly respected teacher of the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma. Under her direction, Sherri's students have consistently received some of the highest scores obtainable. But Sherri has started a new chapter in her career and returned to her first love, stand-up comedy, and has relocated to the comedy capital of the world, New York City. Sherri has performed numerous times at CAROLINE'S, the IMPROV and the Duplex, and also was Boston Comedy Club's 2003 grand finale winner. RIS PERFORMING ARTS 8 MATTHEW GODFREY I have been working as a professional actor since I was ten years old, starting on the TV show "You Can't Do That on Television." As I grew up and studied the craft at the National Theatre School of Canada and the Moscow Art Theatre in Russia, my acting career expanded into dance, improvisation, dinner theatre, street performing, main stage, television and film. I am a firm believer that the art of performing can elevate one's life experience, enhance one's inner and outer core, increase self-esteem and expand compassion and empathy of the human condition. This adventure is my greatest joy and can only be surpassed by seeing students' joyful faces as they explore, discover and create in ways they had never thought of before. Now located in Los Angeles, I have expanded my career into producing, directing and post-production. These entertainment industry experiences have provided me with an entirely new way of looking at the craft I teach, and helps me approach the students with a fresh and contemporary outlook while integrating multiple academic and theatrical disciplines, dramatically, technically, musically, culturally, historically and thematically. My job as a teacher is to instill and foster a creative ability empowering the students to make the connections that no one has seen before. I am sneaky. I take students through the back door of performance techniques and styles while removing preconceived ideas that thwart and stalemate full participation and creativity. We play, discover and will never forget. And, they will all learn the Russian curtain call step dance. . DESTA HAILE I am half English and half Eritrean. I work as a singer, songwriter, teacher and marketing assistant. Born in Bangkok, I have lived in Barbados, Jordan, The Ivory Coast, France, England, Belgium, Brazil and the Philippines. While studying education and social sciences I fell into professional music. Writing original songs and doing backing vocals for artists like Grammy-nominee Zap Mama, Canadian Grammy winner Michael Buble, and Turkish popstar Hadise has kept me travelling a lot to New Zealand, Australia, Tunisia, Russia, the US, the UK, Norway, and many other countries. My backing vocal discography includes French icon Mylene Farmer, Belgo-Italian singer Lara Fabian, and Congolese rapper Baloji. Composing songs and writing lyrics are two of my favorite things, and I have released four albums in the past couple of years, solo and with my funk-soul group The Elements. I have been with ISTA since 2004 and each festival has been an incredible experience, multicultural and creative, whether in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Munich, London, Istanbul, Geneva or Manila. I try to pass on my lessons learned as a professional vocalist, teacher and as international intern at Augusto Boal Theatre of the Oppressed over the short, intense periods of each festival. I love to travel and learn languages, share music and ideas. I aim to inspire students, encouraging them to find what they enjoy doing and pursue it. I fell that ISTA brings out the best in every participant, with each challenging, energy-packed event! RIS PERFORMING ARTS 9
