6th Grade World History Overview Ancient World History covers the time period from the birth of the river civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China to the Middle Ages in Europe. Students will examine the impact of geography on the development of civilizations. Students will focus on causes, effects, and turning points in the rise and fall of various civilizations. The course will include an examination of the spread and transformation of culture and ideas across these regions through trade and conquest. Through the year students will be evaluated on homework assignments, quizzes, projects, and test to demonstrate their knowledge of content. Provided below is an overview of the topics that will be covered during the 2013-­‐
2014 school year. Early River Civilizations -­‐ Mesopotamia -­‐ Egypt -­‐ Indus River Valley -­‐ China Ancient Greece -­‐ Analyze and interpret government, literature, Greek mythology, and architecture on the modern world -­‐ Students will explore the spread of the Hellenistic culture during the reign of Alexander the Great Ancient Rome -­‐ Trace the rise and fall of the Roman Republic -­‐ Examine the origin of Christianity and its impact as it spread throughout the Roman Empire Asian Empires -­‐ Compare and contrast Chinese dynasties -­‐ Role of religions and philosophy in society African Civilizations and the Islamic World -­‐ Explore the impact and accomplishments of early empires of West Africa -­‐ Examine the role of trade in connecting people, cultures, and ideas. -­‐ Examine the origins of Islam and its contributions in art, architecture, science, and mathematics. Early Americas -­‐ Compare and contrast the civilizations of the Maya, Aztecs, Incas, and North American civilizations o Examine the causes of the decline and conquest of these civilizations. Middle Ages in Europe -­‐ Explore the influence of the Christian church on the small kingdom of Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire -­‐ Examine the conflicts between religious and political leaders. -­‐ Draw conclusions about the causes and effects of the Crusades.
