MATH MAKES SENSE
UNIT 3: DECIMALS
VOCABULARY: KEY WORDS
ten-thousandths
hundred-thousandths
millionths
Assumed Prior Knowledge:
 Students can read and interpret decimals to thousandths
 Students can use estimation strategies to predict sums and differences of
decimals
 Students can multiply and divide whole numbers
KEY MATH LEARNINGS:
Lesson 1: Numbers to Thousandths and Beyond
1. Patterns in the place-value chart help us to know the position and value of each
digit in a decimal number.
Lesson 2: Estimating Products and Quotients
1. Strategies such as front-end estimation, decimal benchmarks, and compatible
numbers can be used to estimate products and quotients with decimals.
Lesson 3: Multiplying Decimals by a Whole Number
1. Multiplying a decimal by a whole number is like multiplying two whole numbers.
2. Estimation can be used to place the decimal point in the product.
Lesson 4: Multiplying a Decimal Less than 1 by a Whole Number
1. When you multiply a decimal less than 1 by a whole number, the product is less
than the whole number.
2. Place value and estimation can be used to multiply a decimal less than 1 by a whole
number.
Lesson 5: Dividing Decimals by a Whole Number
1. Dividing a decimal by a whole number involves the same procedure as dividing a
whole number by a whole number.
2. Estimation can be used to place the decimal point.
Unit 3
Lesson 6: Dividing Decimals
1. To reach a remainder of zero when dividing a decimal by a whole number, it is
sometimes necessary to add zeros in the dividend.
2. Sometimes you may never reach a remainder of zero, no matter how many zeros
you write in the dividend. Then the quotient is an approximate.
Lesson 7: Dividing a Decimal Less than 1 by a Whole Number
1. When you divide a decimal less than 1 by a whole number, the quotient is less than
both the dividend and the divisor.
Lesson 8: Strategies Toolkit
1. Understanding what a problem is about is an important step toward solving the
problem.
