Unit 1 Vocabulary Words
1) Biotic: Living factors in the environments Ex) Trees, animals, mushrooms
2) Abiotic: Nonliving factors of the environment Ex) water, rocks, light, and
temperature
3) Organism: Single living thing
4) Population: A group of organisms of the same species that live in a
specific geographical area.
5) Community: All the populations of species that live in the same habitat
and interact with each other.
6) Ecosystem: A community of organisms and their abiotic environment
(biotic + abiotic factors)
7) Biosphere: The part of Earth where life exists
8) Producer: An organism (plant) that makes its own food
9) Consumer: An organism that feeds on other plants or animals for energy
10) Decomposer: An organisms that breaks down dead plants or animals
11) Food Web: A diagram that shows the feeding relationships between
organisms in an ecosystem
12) Prey: An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism
13) Parasitism: A relationship between two species in which one species, the
parasite, benefits from the other species, the host, which is harmed (+ -)
14) Commensalism: A relationship between two organisms in which one
organism benefits and the other is unaffected (+ 0)
15) Predator: An organism that eats all or part of another organism
16) Symbiosis: A relationship in which two different organisms live in close
association with each other
17) Mutualism: A relationship between two species in which both species
benefits (+ +)
