Murali Mani Database Systems Research Lab Email: mmani @cs.wpi.edu Webpages: Topics projects in databases and web applications and XML http://www.cs.wpi.edu/~mmani http://davis.wpi.edu/dsrg 1 Databases making their data accessible to web applications. 2 XML Views over Relational DBs Xpath/ Xquery Database mapping XML (Oracle) view 3 Area 1: ER-2-XML Convert ER Schemas to XML Schemas Ideas : Extend ER Model to capture more semantics Map extended ER Model into an XML schema Retrieve data from database Return result in XML Status: initial tool implemented by prior MQP team and available for download. Paper : published in XSym’04. 4 Area 2: Updating XML Views of Relational Databases CoT defines a specific XML View over RDB Tasks : Study how to translate updates specified over such views Develop simple translations for insert, delete and modify\ Status: Prior MQP team has worked on this, more cases can be added. 5 Elke A. Rundensteiner Database Systems Research Lab Email: rundenst@cs.wpi.edu Office: Fuller 238 Phone: x – 5815 Webpages: http://www.cs.wpi.edu/~rundenst http://davis.wpi.edu/dsrg Topics projects in database and Information systems, such as, web information systems, distributed databases, Etc. 6 Project Topics in a Nutshell: Distributed Data Sources: EVE : Data Warehousing over Distributed Data Sources TOTAL-ETL : Distributed Extract Transform Load Tools Web Information Systems: RAINBOW : XML to Relational Database Management MASS : Native XQuery Processing System Databases and Visualization: Visualization-Driven Data Caching Prefetching based on User Access Patterns Stream Monitoring Systems: Query Engine of Data Streams Monitoring Applications: Motion 7 CAPE : Engine for Querying and Monitoring Streaming Data Example of Stream Data Applications: • Market Analysis –Streams of Stock Exchange Data • Critical Care –Streams of Vital Sign Measurements • Physical Plant Monitoring –Streams of Environmental Readings 8 Databases Upside Down static data data data data Standing queries Query Query Query Query data one-time queries data data streams of data 9 MQP Projects in CAPE Develop new services for core engine: Scheduler of query flow graphs Data shedder under fluctuating loads Distributed query processing Develop stream applications e.g.: TRAFFIC, SENSORS, HEALTH, … Load real data streams : traffic simulation Develop useful queries, like “average density in city region X over last 5 minute window” Provide usable GUI and visual result for monitoring 10 TotalETL MQP Projects General: Data warehousing and collaboration workflow management tool suites Current MQP Project: Developed a collaboration server, complete with session manager, project manager, job scheduler, and project repository. Proposed MQP Projects: Extend collaboration server to support scalable project execution by utilizing cluster of machines, java concurrent thread libraries for parallel project flows, better scheduling. Develop client (GUI) that enables users to collaborative develop ‘projects’, as well as administrator GUI to monitor status of project executions. 11 If Questions, email me: rundenst@cs.wpi.edu or visit DSRG at Fuller 319 & 318. 12
