SECTION D: Specialty and Present Interest Central nervous system (CNS) is composed of neurons and glia. Although non-neuronal glial cells have been merely thought to be supporting cells in the past, recent evidence indicates that they play an important role in every aspect of brain physiology and pathology. Especially, they are the main component of neuroinflammation and are associated with many CNS disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Our lab is interested 7 in finding new diagnostic and therapeutic methods based on glia using a variety of molecular & cell biology techniques and animal models. Specific areas of investigation include: - Comparative analysis of glial secretome and cerebrospinal fluid proteome of patients Chemical biology approach to find small-molecule inhibitors of neuroinflammation Mapping of disease gene interaction network using yeast systems biology Large-scale functional screen to identify novel cell migration regulators Functional characterization of lipocalin protein family in glia and neuroinflammation Research keywords: - Neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration Functional genomics and proteomics based on large-scale experiments Neuron-glia interaction via optogenetic control of glia 8
