2011-2013: Ethnographer: studying community building, social organization, deconversion, and conflict in the local and national non-theist movement.
2004: Ethnographer: continued longitudinal study of a religious community in Canby,

1991: Consultant: reviewed archeological literature on prehistoric, Southern California
for Brian F. Mooney Associates, San Diego, California.
1991: Ethnographer: conducted a preliminary study of the impact of evangelical
religious groups on the social structure of communities in the country of Belize.
1989-1991: Ethnographer: observed and participated in a religious community resulting
in a Ph.D. Dissertation titled “The Structure of Anti-Structure: The Development and
Organization of a Religious Community in a Small Western Town.”
1983: Archeologist: surveyed prehistoric sites for the Gund Ranch Archeological
Project, sponsored by the College of Agriculture, University of Nevada, Reno,
and the State of Nevada Division of Historic Preservation and Archeology.
1982-1983: Ethnographer: participated in a rural, Californian community, observing the
inhabitants' reaction to the encroachment and political domination of a religious
commune. This research resulted in a Master's Thesis titled “The Impact of a Religious
Movement on a Small Town.”
1981: Research Assistant: aided in the development of a model and research
design, and surveyed and excavated sites in the Comstock Lode area, Virginia
City, Nevada, for the State of Nevada Division of Historic Preservation.
