Metamorphic Rocks
Metamorphic Rock

Rock that has been changed (metamorphosed) into a
different rock type, without actually melting, by an
increase in temperature and/or pressure, and/or the
action of chemical fluids.
How does the temperature
increase?

The temperature increases either from being buried
deeper into the earth or if the surrounding rock is
heated.

Rocks can get moved along faults.

Faults – A fracture or fracture zone of rock, along
which rock masses have moved relative to one another
parallel to the fracture.
Deformation in
Metamorphism

Regional Metamorphism – a general term for
metamorphism affecting an extensive region.

Rock can become extremely deformed during
metamorphism. When plates collide, it can cause
extreme change in the rock around the boundary,
thus the changes.
The original rock

Protolith – the original rock that metamorphic rocks
are formed from. Either the igneous rock or
sedimentary rock that it used to be.
