GRUNDTVIG 2 LEARNING PARTNERSHIPS Project title: “EDUCATION FOR ADAPTATION POLICIES PRACTICES TO CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE EUROPEAN AREAS” COORDINATING ORGANIZATION: ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER OF DRAPETSONA GREECE, 1 MONEMVASIAS STR. & AL.PANAGOULI 186 48 DRAPETSONA TELEPHONE: 0030 210 4618297 FAX: 0030 210 4612422 E-mail: mail@kpe-drapets.att.sch.gr Contact Person’s name: ANNA SAVVOPOULOU CO – DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER Telephone: 0030 210 4624627 Mobile 0030 6948894054 E-mail: annasavvopoulou@gmail.com ansav22@yahoo.gr AND Summary of the project The adverse impacts of human induced climate change are undoubtedly are the last few years the major concern for national governments, multilateral institutions, mass media and the civil society. According to the latest 4th Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change the international community ought to take measures in order to stabilize greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and keep the temperature’s rise below the threshold of 2 Celsius. However, even the most efficient measures are decided in order to mitigate greenhouse emissions, still the climate change impacts will affect us for the next 50 years. According to the European Union’s stats a 50cm sea level rise will cause 19.000 km² of land permanently lost, 1,4 million people flooded each year and overall costs approximately 18 billion Euros per year. However if adaptation measures are implemented, the land lost will be reduced only to 1.000 km² and damages to 1 billion Euros annually. Therefore it is more rational to focus on the adaptation measures and policies so as to be prepared for the forthcoming climate shocks. European coastal areas such us the Mediterranean Sea is according to the scientific community one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change. Thus local communities in the coastal areas should be educated and trained in order to get prepared and adapt to the new state of environment that will make its presence in the next decade. The accomplishment of the proposed project depends on the development of synergies among different European partners in order to exchange knowledge, scientific expertise and best practices. Through this project we are going to apply lifelong learning methods to environmental education. Project identification data The adverse impacts of climate change in European coastal areas Existing adaptation strategies or adaptation measures to be decided. Case studies and best practices examples both national and transnational. Consulting, preparation and reorientation of human activities in coastal areas to climate variability. Incorporation of all above in Environmental Education.
