Building a Food Web Assignment
Procedure
1. Your will need to include a MINIMUM (but you can have more) of the following in your food web:

6 different producers

5 different primary consumers (herbivores)

4 different secondary consumers (eats herbivores or is an omnivore)

3 different tertiary consumers (top predator)
You may use organisms from the provided page, but to meet the requirements from above, you must find the rest yourself
(from the internet, clipart, etc. or you can draw them!)
2. Include the sun, the source of energy, in your food web.
3. Place your producer pictures close to the sun.
4. Place two or three appropriate animals around producers. If one animal could eat another, join them with an arrow.
Remember that arrows represent the flow of energy from one organism to another and consequently must be drawn
in the right direction.
5. Add the rest of the organisms and connect them using arrows.
6. When your food web is complete and neatly arranged, include arrows in your diagram (electronic or hand drawn).
7. In brackets under each organism, write its niche. An ecological niche is an organisms role/position in an
ecosystem, for example, Producer, Herbivore, Carnivore, Omnivore.
Discussion: Answer the Following questions in complete sentences.
1. Diagram three different food chains from your food web beginning with the sun and with arrows in the right direction.
2. Describe where the decomposers would fit into this food web and why.
3. Create a pyramid of energy for one food chain on your food web. Be sure to include all necessary labels.
4. Which organisms in the food web were the most numerous (found in the greatest numbers)? Why?
5. Which organisms were the least numerous? Why?
6. What would happen to your food web community if:
a. all the producers died? Explain.
b. all the herbivores died? Explain.
c. the decomposers died? Explain.
7. Which organisms are the most important in your food web? Explain your answer.

the required components)
Level 4
- makes connections in
familiar and unfamiliar
contexts, evaluates food
web impacts and
demonstrates thoroughly
detailed effort
- manipulates the assigned
form to achieve the
desired purpose and
effects; thorough
communication of food
