The Faculty of Economic Sciences
and Information Technology is one of
the two faculties on the Vaal Triangle
Campus that offers undergraduate and
postgraduate programmes to prepare
students for the fast-growing world of
financial services industries,
information technology, business
mathematics, informatics, accounting,
chartered accountants, economics,
business management, marketing and
sports sciences.
The vision of the faculty is keeping with
the ethos of our university and to
become a faculty of distinctive
academic excellence driven by the
pursuit of value to all interest groups.
The mission is to become a balanced
teaching-learning and research faculty
with due recognition of the innovative
implementation of expertise.
The programmes offered by our faculty,
address various domains of academic
enquiry, and are geared to provide
solutions to real life situations within
a vibrant economy. The programmes

B.Com Financial Accountancy(SAIPA)
This degree is the initial stage of study leading to the professional Chartered
Accountant qualification. A Chartered Accountant is the highest professional
accounting qualification. After completion of the three year B.Com degree,
successful applicants do a year B.Com (honours) degree. The honours give
admission to the professional CA examinations. After passing both professional
examinations and completing a three year contract with a registered auditor, the
candidate can register as a Chartered Accountant.
This degree is the initial stage of study leading to professional SAIPA
qualification. After completing the three year degree, the student can register for
B.Com (honours) degree in Financial Accountancy. With the honours degree and a

Data mining is mainly used by companies with a strong consumer focus. This includes
retailers, finance institutions as well as communication and marketing organizations.
Data mining enables companies to distinguish internal factors, such as prices and
product position from external factors which include economic indicators and
competitive customer demographics. Through a full range of topics as well as the
practical application of data mining and other business intelligence concepts, this
curriculum will empower students to impact on company sales, customer satisfaction

In addition to the outcomes discussed for the BSc qualification the student will,
on successful completion of the curriculum, also have the following specific
knowledge and skills: The functioning of an economy, introductory micro- and
macro economics, the impact of asset and liability management of banks on
the national economy; risk, liquidity policy, lending policy, liability
management and the apportionment of capital by banks and the South
African futures market; the nature, aim and basic theory of accounting,
object-oriented programming, artificial intelligence, data structures and algorit
hms, and modern IT developments; the ability to identify and solve convergent
and divergent quantitative risk management problems in a creative and
pro-active manner; in-depth knowledge of and insight into financial markets
and financial risk instruments and solving their inter-related problems; the
ability to identify and develop quantitative financial risk; computer and data
analysis techniques and/or approaches on an entrepreneurial basis with a view
to managing financial risks; the ability to negotiate database management
systems with ease.

The qualification will equip students with degree level expertise and
appropriate skills in the field of Computer Science Students who have
completed this programme will be able to serve nationally as programmers,
system analysts and database administrators.
Data mining is mainly used by companies with a strong consumer focus. This includes
retailers, finance institutions as well as communication and marketing organizations.
Data mining enables companies to distinguish internal factors, such as prices and
product position from external factors which include economic indicators and
competitive customer demographics. Through a full range of topics as well as the
practical application of data mining and other business intelligence concepts, this
curriculum will empower students to impact on company sales, customer satisfaction
and corporate profits.
