METAMORPHIC ROCKS Earth Science Week 4 part 3 Mrs. Rubright HOW ARE METAMORPHIC ROCKS FORMED? Metamorphism is the process of change in the structure and constitution of rocks Heat from magma warms up the rock around it Pressure from the upper layers of rock push on the lower layers HEAT AND PRESSURE The rocks become more malleable and can bend and fold. FORMATION Metamorphic rocks are formed when the structure and constitution of existing rocks change due to heat, pressure, or chemical reaction Metamorphic rocks have “parent rocks” -- the rocks that were “squished” to make the new rock. A metamorphic can have just one parent rock, or many parent rocks. Sandstone Quartz Quartzite METAMORPHIC ROCKS FORM IN TWO WAYS . . . • Contact metamorphism • Regional metamorphism CONTACT METAMORPHISM Occurs when heat and magma invaded existing rocks. The stars indicate the areas inside the Earth where rock would undergo contact metamorphism REGIONAL METAMORPHISM Occurs when large areas of the Earth’s crust rub against each other causing heat and pressure that change existing rocks. Stars indicate where rocks undergo regional metamorphism due to 2 tectonic plates colliding TYPES OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS Changes in temperature and pressure, and reactions with chemicals, can rearrange the minerals in a rock or form new minerals. Metamorphic rocks are described as either “foliated” or “non-foliated”. FOLIATION Foliated rocks contain parallel layers of flat and elongated minerals. A foliated rock structure has visible layers or bands aligned in planes. FOLIATED METAMORPHIC ROCKS Some foliated rocks have layers in different colors. Other foliated rocks are one color, but you can see layers along the edges where the rock is broken. NON-FOLIATION A non-foliated structure is a rock structure without visible layers or bands. Nonfoliated rocks have mineral grains with random, interlocking texture.
