Two Ways to Use the Distributive Property to Multiply
Method 1 Add the numbers. Then
multiply by the first factor.
Method 2 Multiply each addend by the first
factor. Then add the products.
a(b + c)
(a × b) (a × c)
= 5 × (13 + 17)
= 5 × 30
= 150
= (5 × 13) + (5 × 17)
= 65 + 85
= 150
Use the Distributive Property to find the value of the variable.

7 × 45 = (v × 40) + (7 × 5)

8 × 64 = (8 × 34) + (8 × k)

9 × c = (9 × 20) + (9 × 9)

3 × 73 = (3 × h) + (3 × 40)

p × 38 = (4 × 25) + (4 × 13)

9 × 63 = (z × 52) + (9 × 11)
4.
6 × 56 = (6 × 30) + (6 × m)
8.
4 × y = (4 × 39) + (4 × 39)
Writing Math Use the Distributive Property to explain why both
of these number sentences can be used to find 6 × 56.
6 × (50 + 6) = (6 × 50) + (6 × 6)
6 × (34 + 22) = (6 × 34) + (6 × 22)
