The Red Curtain Trilogy is the formal and official marketing title for Baz Luhrmann's first three
films:
Strictly Ballroom (1992) starring Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice
William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996), starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes
Moulin Rouge! (201), starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor
Each film contains a theatre motif which reappears throughout the film.
[edit] Characteristics and hallmarks
Each film features luxurious design work. The costumes, music, sets and script are all
rich, sumptuous and intricate.
Catherine Martin, Craig Pearce and Marius DeVries have all worked on each film.
Additionally, John Leguizamo appeared in the latter two films as a supporting actor.
Each film's plot is based on a myth or widely-known story, the ending of which it can
be assumed the audience is familiar. Strictly Ballroom is based on the David and
Goliath Bible story; Romeo + Juliet is based on the Shakespeare play of the same
name; and Moulin Rouge! is based on the operas La Traviata and La Boheme.
Each film has a thematic device through which the story is told. In Strictly Ballroom,
this is the dancing, in Romeo and Juliet it is the poetry, and in Moulin Rouge! it is the
music.
All use techniques seen within the Western, Musical and Romantic-Comedy movie
genres. The style is meant to be heightened, and non-realistic, so that at all times the
audience are aware that they are being entertained in a theatrical way.
The films each represent the end (curtain falling) of older methods of entertainment
blended with the contemporary styles that have overshadowed them: classical dance,
verse drama, and musical theatre.
Publicity for the Red Curtain Trilogy
box set
• Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy showcases a method of unique
film making that dares to break the conventions of typical Hollywood
movies. While critics can sometimes be less appreciative of his
talent, Luhrmann's determination to reinvent genres and break away
from the traditional process of story-telling has rewarded him with
worthy recognition across the world.
• The Red Curtain style of film making was devised by Luhrmann with
certain specifics in mind that serve to actively promote audience
participation. These are: 1) the audience knows how it will end right
from the start; 2) the storyline is thin and simple; 3) the world
created in the film is one of heightened reality; and 4) there is to be
a specific device driving the story, whether it be dance, iambic
pentameter or characters bursting out in song.
• Luhrmann made ballroom dancing trendy again with Strictly
Ballroom, introduced Shakespeare to a whole new generation with
the remarkable modernisation of Romeo and Juliet, and then went
on to reinvent movie musicals with the box office smash hit, Moulin
Rouge.

Chanel No. 5
Baz Luhrmann's Chanel No. 5 commercial (or 'film', as Luhrmann prefers it being called), reunited Luhrmann and his
Moulin Rouge! star, Nicole Kidman, in one of the most expensive and elaborate advertisements of all time. The film was
screened all over the world from 2004 to 2006.
Shooting of Baz Luhrmann's Chanel No. 5 film took place on the Fox Studios backlot in Sydney, Australia, from 19 to 23
December 2003. Despite intense security on set, many details were leaked to the press and this information helped to
further increase the general anticipation of this pioneering advertisement. Rumoured to be one of the most expensive
commercials ever made, the exact figure spent appears to be unknown, with various media publications speculating
anywhere from around AU$10 million in total, to over AU$10 million a minute! The costumes and set pieces are
exquisite, with the Chanel No. 5 pendant Kidman wears in the final scene of the film containing an amazing 687
diamonds. The film took five days to shoot, but many months to prepare. The Chanel No. 5 film runs for exactly two
minutes, with a further minute of credits, although these credits were only shown with selected screenings of the
film. The film was also cut down to around a 30 second version for television screenings in many countries.
While shooting the Chanel No. 5 film at Fox Studios, a half-hour "making of" special was also produced. This short film
gives an insightful look into the creation of this stunning advertisement, and features interviews with Luhrmann, Martin,
and others involved with the production.
The score for the Chanel No. 5 film was Debussy's Clair De Lune, performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and
conducted by Craig Armstrong, who also worked with Luhrmann on Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!
As far as I know, the Chanel No. 5 film has not been released in DVD format to date. However, the film is currently being
shown on the 'You Tube' website. Also available to view are the five parts of the 'Making Of' documentary.
