Yr8 Mod12 Concluding lesson 2
Chemical Reactions I
Safety



Sodium Hydroxide is corrosive
Iron III Chloride is harmful and Corrosive
Wear safety glasses at all times and clear up
any spills immediately with plenty of fresh
water. Wash hands before eating
Brief
Investigate the reaction between iron III Chloride and sodium hydroxide
Method
1/ Place 2cm3 of Sodium Hydroxide solution into a test tube.
2/ Place 2cm3 of Iron III Chloride solution into a second test tube.
3/ Pour the content of one test tube into the other and store in a test
tube rack.
Results and Conclusion
Q1 Describe the appearance of each solution before the reaction?
Q2 Describe the products of the reaction.
Q3 Did a chemical reaction take place? How do you know?
Q4 Write a word equation for the reaction.
Q5 Explain using a simple model how you worked out what the products
of the reaction would be.
Q5 What do you think the brown precipitate might be? Hint: have you
seen anything the same colour in a scrapyard?

Reaction 2
Safety


Lead nitrate is both Toxic and Oxidising
avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Wear safety glasses at all times. Ask for
technician assistance to clear up any spills.
Brief
Investigate the reaction between Lead Nitrate and Potassium Iodide
1/ Place 2cm3 of Lead Nitrate solution into a test tube.
2/ Place 2cm3 of Potassium Iodide solution into a second test tube.
3/ Pour the content of one test tube into the other and store in a test
tube rack.
Results and Conclusion
Q6 Describe the appearance of each solution before the reaction?
Q7 Describe the products of the reaction.
Q8 Did a chemical reaction take place? How do you know?
Q9 Write a word equation for the reaction.
Q10 Explain using a simple model how you worked out what the products
of your reaction would be.
Q11 What do you think the Yellow precipitate might be? Hint: All
compounds of elements in group 1 are generally colourless in solution?
Explain your answer.

Cut out these boxes… then break the bonds between the
ions with your scissors. Put the ions back together in the new
order by drawing new bonds between them
