“Changing Rocks” – nickname because rocks change into new metamorphic rocks! METAMORPHIC ROCKS are classified according to the arrangement of the grains that make up the rock & the minerals in them. They form from the heat & pressure deep inside Earth. They can form from igneous, sedimentary or other metamorphic rocks as they are pushed down toward the heat of the mantle. Types of metamorphic Define each and give examples of each rocks: (What was the original rock and what type of metamorphic rock results?) Foliated Metamorphic Rock Def: These rocks have grains arranged in layers or bands that split in flat layers (3) Ex: Slate, Schist, Gneiss Key: () = Heat & Pressure Nonfoliated Metamorphic Rock Uses of metamorphic rocks: Marble = #1, 2, 3 Slate = #3 & all of the rest (*main uses) Shale (a sedimentary rock) Slate (a metamorphic rock) Granite (an igneous rock) Gneiss (a metamorphic rock) Def: These rocks have mineral grains that are arranged randomly, they don’t spilt in layers (2) Ex: Marble, Quartzite Limestone (a sedimentary rock) Marble (a metamorphic rock) Sandstone (a sedimentary rock) Quartzite (a metamorphic rock) List 7 examples of how metamorphic rocks can be used 1. *Sculptures (most famous = Abraham Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.) 2. *Buildings 3.
