Investigating Electrostatics Recount what you do to charge a Perspex® (acrylic plastic) rod using a silk cloth. A Perspex rod can be charged by rubbing it vigorously with a silk cloth. Explain how the Perspex® rod becomes charged when rubbed with silk. The Perspex rod becomes positively charged because the friction between it and the silk cloth causes electrons to be transferred from the rod to the cloth. If the rod was initially neutral, removing electrons from it leaves it having more protons than electrons. Since the charge on an electron and a proton are equal and opposite, the greater number of protons on the rod leaves it with a net positive charge. Charge one end of a Perspex® rod and balance it on a watch glass. Charge the end of another Perspex® rod and bring it near the charged end of the rod on the watch glass. Vary the distance between the rods when you carry out this investigation. (a)Describe your observations. (b) Explain your observations (a) The rod on the watch glass moves away from the rod brought near to it. The distance between the rods when this occurred was about 2 centimetres. The closer the rod being held was brought to the rod on the watch glass, the more quickly it moved away. (b) Both rods have a positive charge. Because like charges repel each other, the rod on the watch glass experiences a force that causes it to move away from the rod being held. It was also observed that the charged rod attracted the uncharged end of the rod on the watch glass towards it. Now complete the sections below using the above information as a model.
