Obstetrics is the medical profession that deals with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, chiefly at risk situations requiring surgical interventions. Midwifery is the health profession more related to the normal, natural and low-risk process. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN).
