... 25. Find the equation of the line in the x-y plane that goes through the point (−1, 1) and is parallel to the line whose equation is given by 2x + 3y + 4 = 0. Solution From problem 19 the slope of the line is − 23 . The parallel line has the same slope and passes through (−1, 1). Using the point-slo ...

... Can we attach a meaning to the assertion that two vectors tangent to the sphere at two different points p and q are parallel? The answer to this question is no . However it does make sense if we join p to q by a curve: Let c be a curve on the sphere which starts at p and ends at q . Place the sphere ...

System of polynomial equations

A system of polynomial equations is a set of simultaneous equations f1 = 0, ..., fh = 0 where the fi are polynomials in several variables, say x1, ..., xn, over some field k.Usually, the field k is either the field of rational numbers or a finite field, although most of the theory applies to any field.A solution is a set of the values for the xi which make all of the equations true and which belong to some algebraically closed field extension K of k. When k is the field of rational numbers, K is the field of complex numbers.
