Ferroelectricity in Amphiphilic Monolayers

... On the subject of phase transitions, one cannot help but think of water. We interact with its three phases on a daily basis and indeed our basic education would have us believe that, like water, all substances have discrete gas, liquid, and solid phases, and that their transitions occur at precise t ...

... The observed discrete-vortex soliton is a robust structure, which can be reproduced with different experimental parameters such as lattice spacing. In Fig. 5(a) we show another example of the discrete-vortex soliton formed on a lattice with a period of 20 m. The fourlobe output intensity pattern wa ...

... Propagating waves of chemical or biological activity [Eps98, Fie85, Mur89, Wal00] are typical examples of spontaneous pattern formation in macroscopic systems driven far from thermodynamic equilibrium [Bab86, Cro93]. They may show complex dynamics in time or both in time and in space, and they are s ...

One of the reasons behind this search was the evident analogy between electricity (or galvanism) and magnetism. Volta’s pile and magnets have opposite poles that exhibit ...

... Precision Retarders are supplied with a broadband antireflection coating. Optical transmittance of a Precision Retarder is typically greater than 97%. The retardance d at a wavelength λ that is different from the center wavelength λc is given by: d ≈ dc(λc / λ) where dc is the retardance at λc. This ...

Thomas Young (scientist)

Thomas Young (13 June 1773 – 10 May 1829) was an English polymath and physician. Young made notable scientific contributions to the fields of vision, light, solid mechanics, energy, physiology, language, musical harmony, and Egyptology. He ""made a number of original and insightful innovations""in the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs (specifically the Rosetta Stone) before Jean-François Champollion eventually expanded on his work. He was mentioned by, among others, William Herschel, Hermann von Helmholtz, James Clerk Maxwell, and Albert Einstein. Young has been described as ""The Last Man Who Knew Everything"".
