For these reasons, the measured results for surface figure and roughness on the HOMS Si substrates shown in Fig. 6 were used in the wavefront propagation calculations and are expected to be fairly representative of the wavefront results from the final, SiC-coated HOMS ...

POLARIZATION IN OPTICAL FIBERS
POLARIZATION IN OPTICAL FIBERS

... A significant simplification in the description of these modes is based on the fact that most fibers for practical applications use core materials whose refractive index is only very slightly higher than that of the surrounding cladding, i.e. nco — ncl « 1. This assumption leads to the so-called "we ...

... Given the quantum efficiency for a good detector (10% at 500 nm), the final detected photon flux should be about flux detected = 1600 photons (s * pixel * mW of light). NONLINEAR SCATTERING EFFECTS IN OPTICAL FIBERS
NONLINEAR SCATTERING EFFECTS IN OPTICAL FIBERS

... The Raman scattering effect is the inelastic scattering [1] of a photon with an optical phonon, which originates from a finite response time of the third order nonlinear polarization [20] of the material. When a monochromatic light beam propagates in an optical fiber, spontaneous Raman scattering (Figu ...

3D optical data storage

3D optical data storage is the term given to any form of optical data storage in which information can be recorded and/or read with three-dimensional resolution (as opposed to the two-dimensional resolution afforded, for example, by CD).This innovation has the potential to provide petabyte-level mass storage on DVD-sized discs (120mm). Data recording and readback are achieved by focusing lasers within the medium. However, because of the volumetric nature of the data structure, the laser light must travel through other data points before it reaches the point where reading or recording is desired. Therefore, some kind of nonlinearity is required to ensure that these other data points do not interfere with the addressing of the desired point. No commercial product based on 3D optical data storage has yet arrived on the mass market, although several companies are actively developing the technology and claim that it may become available ""soon"".
